Does your district offer pre-school in your school for 3 and 4 year olds? If so, what is the schedule? 1/2 days? Full days? Everyday?

Could you send this to the elementary principals for me? I was just wondering how many schools have a preschool and how they run it. Is it funded by the school only or by head start or a combination? What ages are eligible to attend?
Thanks,
Mike Schmidt

We have a universal preschool. We are in partnership with Head Start and serve nearly 100 students. The remainder of the funds necessary to run the program are from Title I, Impact Aid and General fund.
We have 2 sessions, AM and PM. They are 3.5 hours each. Transportation is within city limits and 1.5 miles beyond. All students are eligible. We have open enrollments with criteria that applies since we are not required to provide preschool as a public school.
This was our first year and it has been very successful. Come down and visit! Last day is 17 May.

Castlewood has a preschool for 4 year olds. Students must be 4 by Sept. 1. It is funded by the general fund because we want all students to be able to attends and we are targeted assisted Title. We charge a $25 per month fee. If students are on reduced/free meals it is $15/$0. We have two groups, each group attends three days per week for 2 1/2 hours. The bus picks them up on morning route, but the parents are responsible for transporting them home. The preschool is located in our school building. We have one certified teacher and an aide in the classroom. The certified teacher is also our Title math teacher in the afternoons. To date we have had 100% participation by all students entering kindergarten. It is really good for that transition. We have all day everyday kindergarten.
Please feel free to contact me or Kristy Borer our preschool teacher if you have questions.

At Gayville-Volin School we currently have a three and four year old program being held at separate times each week. For example, 3 year olds attend in the morning on Tues/Thurs from 8:15 - 11:00 and 4 year olds attend Tues/Thurs from 12:30 - 3:15pm. This past year we started a combination program with Headstart. Headstart is providing a teacher for us on those two days. All of this is paid for by Title Funds--parents do not pay for preschool or transportation. Again, this preschool is open to all students that are 3 or 4 by Sept. 1 each year.

We have preschool in the school system, but their is tuition. We are currently offering Monday - Thursday 8:30 -11:30. This year we also had an afternoon preschool class from 12:30 -3:20 on Monday and Wednesday.
Next year we are hoping to get a full-time am and pm class going. Some students come in the morning, but either Mon/Wed OR Tues/Thurs. We max out at 20 kids. It might sound confusing, if you have questions please don't hesitate to call...Thanks The tuition for full-time am or pm is around $140.00. Part-time 2 days a week is $70.00 -$75.00. We have an inclusive pre-school and I have a pre-school transition plan. I lost my computer copy changing computers, so I will send a hard copy to anyone that needs one. I went through the state training 3 years ago and used their forms and their model.

I am glad to see so many schools take an interest in early childhood education whether it be a pre-school or an Junior Kindergarten Program. I would like to make a couple of comments that I think are important as it pertains to these two programs in terms of finances.
The state does not provide any financial aid for pre-school thought you may fund it from other sources or a combination of sources such as Title One, Head Start, charging parents. The state recognizes pre-k as a pre-school program regardless of the age of the student and will not provide state aid.
The State does provide financial aid for kindergarten (around 4200 per student for 2005-06). The state does not have a mandatory kindergarten program. So, it doesn't matter what type of program you have half-day, every other day, whole day...the state provides the same amount of financial aid (roughly 4200 dollars) as long as you call it Kindergarten and the students are five years old by Sept. 1.
At Platte Elementary, we have a JUNIOR KINDERGARTEN program. The students are five on Sept. 1. They attend every day for a half of a day. These students will attend all-day, everyday kindergarten the year following Junior Kindergarten. As far as the State is concerned, I am running a kindergarten program and I receive full state funding.
In a nutshell, the state will fully fund kindergarten and Junior Kindergarten, it will not fund pre-school or pre-kindergarten. Be careful to apply the correct name to the program you want. I would be happy to discuss this with anyone.

This is the information I sent to those requesting information on our Junior Kindergarten Program.
We have a junior kindergarten program here at West Central.
First of all, our junior kindergarten is the same age requirement as kindergarten. It is the only way we can fund it. This allows for state money to follow the child, since they are school age (Five years by September 1st).
We screen all kindergarten students the end of April. This gives us a base for talking to parents during the exit review with the parents (the elementary principals do this). Sometimes in talking with parents we get a "feel" for how receptive they might be to junior kindergarten (or not).
We believe junior kindergarten gives kids that added year to grow in a structured environment, while working on pre-kindergarten skills. We are very clear with parents that if a child is in junior kindergarten, he/she will be in regular kindergarten the next year.
Junior kindergarten is a half day - every day program. Our regular kindergarten is full day - every day.
We provide van transportation in the middle of the day. Junior kindergarten students need to get to school the same as regular kindergarten if they are in the morning group. We transport home or to day care at noon, since so many parents are working in Sioux Falls.
We pick kids up for the afternoon session, and they have to get home like other kindergarten students would.
We are blessed with a very wonderful junior kindergarten teacher who should market her curriculum. I will give her your names, so she can give you more information as needed.
We have been doing this now for 7 years (I think) and we are tracking those kids as far as testing data and it is looking very good. I did hear a speaker at the SE Area Principals meeting (she was from USD) who was against Jr.K programs because she felt that kindergarten teachers need to be ready for all students, not students needing to be ready for kindergarten. She felt that by being "older" going through school, kids had a higher drop out rate. We would need to see data on that, but we're not seeing this here at West Central. I believe this is a needed environmental and academic boost for those kids most in need and truly a benefit to our kids and our district. I also believe that with large kindergarten numbers, it can be challenging for the best of teachers to meet every child where they are, every day.
The attachment deals with how we decide the cut-off for the number of students for our teacher. Our business manager helped us to formulate this, so we would still be financially on sound footing, while keeping our numbers low.
Feel free to call me or email back.
