AR Question

would like to request information pertaining to Accelerated Reading usage in both elementary and middle school classrooms. Do teachers use the program as part of the reading grade? Do your parents support the program? Do you provide rewards for students?

We use the AR program extensively in 1-5 grades with monthly rewards for reaching individually set goals done by the teacher with the student. In MS, AR is used as part of the reading grade. In HS, it is a requirement to read an AR book for some of the classes. You may want to email Dennis Van Overschelde about the MS and HS.

We use it as a supplemental reading program- non graded, but teachers set monthly goals within their classrooms for each child. I have challenged all the kids to reach a certain goal and then I will do something silly as a motivator at the end of the year. We have simple monthly celebrations using

simple rewards and we print AR certificates.

Hi ,

I am in charge of the AR program in our school and will try to answer your questions. We have AR in grades 1st through 8th grades. The teachers in the elementary do not give grades for AR but the 7th and 8th grade teachers require them to take so many tests and they are given grades for them. We have an incentive program where their points accumulate and they get so much for different milestones. A 25 point plaque is given and then plates are added for every 25 points up to 250 and then we go by 50 points. If you want to know more I would be glad to send you a list of our incentives ect.

Our teachers do use the program as part of the reading grade. They count it as 10% of the grade. Parents support the program and we do provide rewards. Our local D.A.R.E. officer helps us by providing some D.A.R.E. prizes. I am not sure how the teachers decide the prizes. I can get more information about this if you are interested

We use Accelerated Reader for the middle school, but we do not use it in the elementary school. We do use Book Adventure and another software program to quiz students over books they have read and we seem to like these programs over Accelerated Reader at the elementary level.

efferson Elementary has been an AR school for 10 years. We have teachers who include it in the reading grade (not the best idea, however, some have a hard time not giving a grade for work required/completed. Our parents have been very supportive of the program. They are always looking to see if they can help us get additional books, tests, etc. Our PTO provides each classroom with $40.00 as incentives to be used as they see fit. We establish building point goals and have a celebration when we reach it.

We love the program and have been very successful with it.

Chester has Reading Counts which is similar to Accelerated Reader. Teachers promote it in the classroom and then send students to me for prizes. Each classroom (1-6) sets their own goals for five different levels of reading. I put different colored stars up on the wall for each level and students choose a prize from their level. The parents are very supportive of the program but don't do anything financially. The Parent Council provides the money for the prizes. Faith Stratton

We use the AR program, but it is run through our Lirary and the Librarian takes care of the rewards. They are based on points reached. No the program is not used as part of a reading grade.

At Oscar Howe Elementary, we use it in two ways.

At 2nd grade it is strictly an incentive program and we supply pencils and certificates (lunch with the Principal, Counselor, Secretary, etc.)

At 5th grade is sometimes is part of the Assessment Data (Stars Test) to know the approx. level of their skills and it may be included in their reading goals which does affect their grade.

We love A.R. We only use it has a individual reading program. This is to be done during their free time or at home. Students do get rewards for points earned such as free time in the gym, a movie and popcorn, an hour at a park or whatever fun ideas we can come up with that don't cost a lot of money.

Our students also get to write their name and date on the wall in the gym for different amount of points earned. The goal is to help students learn to read just for fun!!! Our reading scores are up and the parents do support it. If a child decides not to reach the goal, then they don't get to go to the party. We try to make the goals reachable for success, but you always have those few who hate to read. If you have any more questions on it, feel free to call me.

Thanks,

We use AR reading as part of the library program and classroom program. In elementary grades 2 - 6 are given a set number of points. (determined by the classroom teacher. Some teachers do a reward some do not. In May every student that met the yearly goal has a pizza party. The local Pizza Ranch gives us a good deal. Jr & Sr. high incorporates this into their English/reading grade.

I would like to request information pertaining to Accelerated Reading usage in both elementary and middle school classrooms. Do teachers use the program as part of the reading grade? In grades 5-8 it is part of a student's reading grade. Do your parents support the program? yes Do you provide rewards for students? Our library sets goals for students and gives many awards at the end of the year. This year classrooms won tailgate parties and NFL prizes. Our grand prize was an official NFL autographed football from the Dolphins!
