At Lincoln Elementary in Yankton we departmentalize at the 5th grade level. Each of the three home room teachers teaches their own language arts and their specific subject before students go to lunch at 12:15 p.m. After their noon lunch and their recess break, which is 1:00 p.m., the students do independent reading for 15 minutes and then go to different classrooms for math, science or social studies. Consequently, they have only two specials in the p.m.

In Beresford we departmentalize in 5th and 6th grade. We are planning to move our 6th grade into a middle school next year and so we will only have 5th grade that will departmentalize. We have tried to use a middle school philosophy with our 5th/6th grades so that the departmentalized approach is not mini-high school in nature. We have also departmentalized math and reading in fourth grade when the makeup of our staff merited it being done that way.

We have departmentalized starting in the 3rd grade for Science, Social Studies, Art and Creative Writing. However I am encouraging my teachers to move to self contained classrooms. Our 4th grade is now totally self contained and it is working very well.

At SES we are K-4. In 4th grade I have 5 sections and four of the rooms departmentalize, two work together and the other two work together. They

split- one teaches Reading, LA and Science or Social Studies while the other teaches Math, Spelling, Writing and Science or Social Studies. My fifth class is self contained.

Hope this helps.

Castlewood departmentalizes in 4, 5, and 6 grade. One instructor teaches language arts, one teaches science, and one teaches social studies. The students have a grade level instructor for the rest of their classes. Due to our size, we only have one class at each grade level. We have been doing this for a number of years. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Gayville-Volin departmentalizes 3-7 in core subject areas: Reading, Math, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies. We are able to get one period of common planning time for these teachers every day.

I hope this helps.
