Kindergarten Schedule

I was wondering if I could ask a Couple of questions of the Elementary Principals.

1. Do any of you use the Sat 10 for assessment of your K-2.

2. What other types of assessment do you use to see if they are progressing?

We use the DIBELS as a screening tool for the reading. We also use the TPRI to give a more in depth picture of the reading skills demonstrated. The K-3 take the reading part of the SAT 10 because we are a Reading First school. We are weak in Math assessments. We use the math text book year end assessments as a pre and post test.

We do not have a junior kindergarten class at Sioux Valley. We use the Dial for screening. Our Coop, special ed teacher, counselor, and principal and title one person help. My secretary coordinates there appointments and acts as hostess for the event. Thanks, Sandra McGeough

Each Spring, we administer the DIAL 3 to all students who are eligible for Kdgn. We also give it to students of parents who have requested the screening. Judgment of proceeding to Kdgn is based on screening results, parent survey, and preschool teacher remarks.

What tool do you use in your school district for kindergarten screening? If you do screen, who does the testing? Thanks for your help.

I would also like the answers for this question, thanks! We are implementing a preschool for all children fall 2006-2007 and would appreciate any information about the process and curriculum successes or failures! Thanks!

Pierre uses the DIAL-R. Screening is conducted in early April by K teachers, Speech/Language clinicians, nurses, early childhood teacher, Junior Kindergarten teacher, and counselors. This process not only helps us determine Junior Kindergarten candidates, but also helps us project K numbers for the fall.

I was wondering about kindergarten schedules for small schools in the state. Do you have full day everyday? full day every other day? half day every day? Also do districts have guidelines for maximum enrollment per class before adding a section and minimum enrollment per class before discontinuing a section.

Colman-Egan  - First quarter kindergarten attends Monday, Wednesday, Friday.  Beginning of second quarter through the end of the year, they attend every day.  It works well for us.

We don't have a number for breaking classrooms into double grades.  We do however consider it based on 25 and the grade level.

Kindergarten - we go full days M, T, Th, & Fri. No classes on Wed. In regards to class sizes, no we do not have a set number set by the board

This is in response to Nancy's question about kindergarten. Chester has every day all day kindergarten and has had for seven years. We do not have a set number for when we add a class. Right now we have one class of 5th graders with 28 students that are all in one room. (Too many - but not enough for two sections). We also have a class of sixth graders that started as 28 in kindergarten and they are split because of the two special needs students in the room who each need an aide. Physically it wasn't possible to have them all in one room - and there were just too many needs. The board's rationale is that some classes function as one and some don't…it isn't always the size, sometimes it's related more to the level of need. They say they will make the call as the need arises.

At Brandon Valley we have 1/2 day, every day Kind. We do not have a class size policy at any grade level. We also have a Junior Kind for students we feel are not quite ready for Kind, that program is also 1/2 day.

Beresford has full time kindergarten and offer the option of a three day program for those that would prefer that option. This year we have no one taking the three day option and with the demands of NCLB and state standards we are looking at only full time kindergarten for next year. We fund it through the general fund. The funding of it really boils down to a philosophical stance on the importance of early childhood education. We have gone away from a kindergarten screen this year. We looked at our numbers and over 90% of our children attended a preschool. We are planning to develop a screening tool with them this year that we feel will be more informative than the one-time assessment that we currently use. For those that do not attend a preschool we still will invite them in to a screening.
