Weather Conditions & Outside Recess
Do you have a guideline for keeping children in on cold days?
Thank you for your response.

If either temp. or wind chill is below zero, they are in. Before school they walk in the gym. Recesses depend if we can get into a gym, if a gym is unavailable, they stay in the classroom.
Shirley Haar,
Colman-Egan School
They stay in when it is below 0.
Dianna Tyler
Below 0 even with wind chill they stay in. We are out in the country.
Larry Goebel
Has to be above 0 temp and above 0 wind-chill and then we factor in common sense :) our playground is out in the open so it feels colder on windy days.
Tanja Pederson, Principal
In Howard if the temp. or wind-chill is below zero we keep the students in
Chris Noid
We check the wind-chill from a website. If we are below 0, we have inside recess. This week is tough. Smiles, Sandra
Sandra McGeough, Ed.D.
Mobridge has a Kelo Weathernet site at our Middle School and linked to our school web page. We use that as our "official" site. We stay inside if the wind-chill is below zero. Some days you need to refresh the site to get a couple readings to be accurate.

O temp
0 wind chillKarn Barth Garretson Elementary Principal
Our school children have indoor recess is the wind-chill is -10 degrees or lower. Frostbite is a possibility after 20-30 minutes at -17 degrees.
Mrs. Nancy L. Springer, Elementary Principal
If it is -10 regular temp or wind chill we keep the students in and have game board days in the gym. Our gym is too small to house all the students at once, so they get to play whatever game they can that is relatively low keyed.

We try to go outside unless the wind chill temperature is below zero.
What do you do when you can't go outside? Do the kids have to stay in the classrooms or do you go to the gym? We go to our gym

We do the same.
We do either. Magic School Bus or Public TV programs that have been recorded or the gym, or free play in the classroom. Outside is definitely better!

Medary School in Brookings follows this plan:
If the actual temperature is 0 Degrees or below, we don't go outside. If the wind chill is 0 degrees to -10 degrees, any outside time is cut in half. If the wind chill is more than -10 degrees, we don't go outside. Hope this helps.Rich Brubakken
We also follow the below zero it is a no go...but otherwise we try to get outside every day.

Air temperature or wind chill below zero we stay in. Rod

We are a little tougher in Beresford! We are air or wind temp at below -10 to stay inside. But we will shorten the recess when we get below zero.

At Willow Lake we go outside if the air temp is 0 or higher. the Wind-chill factor comes into play when that is -5 or colder.
We go into the gym unless we have a home game that evening. Our board doesn't want any marks on the floor when we host an activity. Obviously this doesn't make my teachers happy but that is how we do things. If kids stay in the room they have board games, watch SD Public TV, or the teachers become innovative

I place a glass of water outside and wait for it to freeze. Depending on how long it takes to freeze determines whether we go inside or outside! Just kidding! We also go with the below zero guide line. I would like to recommend a book called "Recess at 20 below", by Cindy Aillaud. It seems appropriate this time of year.
Ryan Nielsen
We follow the same procedure as Willow Lake. 0 or higher we are outside. We also refer to the wind chill chart, so -5 with little or no wind. we would go outside too. Anything below -5 or wind-chill of -10 below we are indoors.

At Lincoln in Watertown - if the wind chill is not more than -10 (and the actual temp is zero or above) - we go out for at least a little while. ABSOLUTELY HATE days when they get no fresh air...
Susan Patrick
We either go the gym for free time or we watch something educational on TV in the library. Lori

We go out if the wind chill is not below -10. In the morning, they play games or read in their rooms. At noon and recess, they go to the gym for 10 minutes and then to their rooms for reading or games for the rest of their recess time.
Myers, Trudie
If the temperature is below zero without the wind chill factor, we do not go outside. If the wind chill is below zero we sometimes shorten the recesses or if it is 10-15 below wind chill, we do not go outside. It also depends on the age of students. Sometimes the kindergarten students do not go outside when it is too cold. I do let parents know our procedure in our November newsletter and repeat the information in the January newsletter.
Paul Struck
We stay in 0 degree or lower wind-chill or actual temp. We go to the gym or stay in classrooms if the gym is busy.
